Have you ever been to Thailand? As Bangkok is the most visited city in the world, chances are you will.
If so, you will know that in addition to being known for its beautiful beaches, it is also known as a deeply religious city full of stunning Buddhist temples. You may have visited them and felt how peaceful they were.
But what is it? Why do so many Thais practice Buddhism? And what do Buddhists believe?
Read on to learn more about Buddhist beliefs.
What is Buddhism?
Buddhism is a religion founded by Buddha. It is the fourth largest religion and has over 500 million followers worldwide. Siddhārtha Gautama – Buddha – lived between 400 and 500 BCE.
He is said to have lived somewhere on the border between India and Nepal, although details of his life vary.
His beliefs and teachings about leading a more peaceful and spiritual life informed what became known as Buddhism after his death.
People often pray to Buddha statues and carry mala prayer beads to help with the process.
The Four Noble Truths
The four noble truths reveal that we live in a constant state of flux. These are emotional states that we are supposed to be able to overcome.
The first truth is that life itself is a process of suffering while the second truth is to understand that suffering is caused by overindulgence. The third truth is to realize that we can be happy and overcome suffering.
The Fourth Truth is a roadmap known as the 8-pronged path for us to lead happier lives.
Important Buddhist Beliefs
There are some important Buddhist beliefs along with the Four Noble Truths that inform the religion as a whole.
We become attached to objects and possessions that are not permanent, but we can never be satisfied and are constantly “dying” and reborn to conquer that.
To escape this, we can enter the world of Nirvana, a state of happiness and peace if we can accept our life.
Buddhists believe in the concept of rebirth after death. But what you will be reborn depends on how you behaved in your current life.
You could be reborn as a celestial creature, a demigod, a human once again, an animal or worse a ghost or hellish creature. If you behave better in your next life after being demoted, you can move up.
This is probably the most famous Buddhist belief. It’s the idea that if you are negative and express negative behavior, it will eventually come back to haunt you. Similarly, if you adopt a positive behavior, you will be rewarded.
All of your energy will be given to you, if not in this life, but perhaps in the next, and this may indicate which creature you will be reborn into.
Buddhist beliefs are an important way of seeing the world
Buddhist beliefs have changed the way many people view the world. The central belief that money and material possessions are only temporary objects of desire that cannot bring us true happiness is an important concept in today’s money-driven world.
The concept of karma and the importance of doing good to everyone we meet is also essential to living a more fulfilling life.
