The evolution of teaching can be difficult under normal circumstances. How’s it going during a pandemic? Bertha Vazquez is our guest and she directs the Teacher Institute for Evolutionary Science (TIES). She sat down and talked about running a classroom and the evolution of teaching. We also had the opportunity to discover Richard Dawkins’ book, The Selfish Gene.
Here’s a bit of her:
Bertha Vazquez has been teaching middle school science at Miami-Dade County Public Schools for more than 30 years. She holds a bachelor’s degree in biology from the University of Miami and a master’s degree in science education from Florida International University. A seasoned traveler who has visited all seven continents, she enjoys introducing the world of nature and science to enthusiastic young minds. A National Board-certified educator, she has received several national and local accolades, including Samsung’s $150,000 Solve For Tomorrow competition in 2014 and the Charles C. Bartlett National Environmental Excellence Award in 2009. She has was a science professor at Miami-Dade. of the year three times, in 1997, 2008 and 2017. She is the 2017 recipient of the National Association of Biology Teachers Evolution Education Award and is also one of Florida’s 2017 finalists for the nation’s most prestigious science award, The Presidential Award for Excellence in Mathematics and Science Teaching.
Here is the TIES mission statement:
The Teachers’ Institute for Evolutionary Science provides elementary and secondary school teachers with the tools they need to effectively teach evolution and respond to its critiques based on new, next-generation scientific standards.
It’s a great conversation and I hope you enjoy it!
