Facts about Adi Guru Shankaracharya, whose Modi statue unveiled in Kedarnath

Dehradun: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday unveiled a 12-foot, 35-ton statue of Adi Guru Shankaracharya in Kedarnath. As part of his visit to the Himalayan sanctuary, he inaugurated the reconstructed Samadhi of the great 8th century philosopher. It is believed that the Samadi was damaged during the devastating floods in Uttarakhand in 2013. Work on the statue began in 2019 and was carried out by a Mysuru inhabitant named Arun Yogiraj.

Speaking on the occasion, Modi said: “There was a time when spirituality and religion were meant to be associated only with stereotypes. But, Indian philosophy speaks of human well-being, sees life in a holistic way. Adi Shankaracharya worked to make society aware of this truth ”,

Shankara, before being known as a great teacher, was born into a devout Nambudiri Brahman family in a village called Kaladi in Kerala. He was a great philosopher known to have consolidated the doctrine of Advaita Vedanta.

Established four Mathas

To unify the dispersed and diverse group of Saanyasis, Shankaracharya, during his travels across the country, established four mathas also called ashramas around AD 700 in different corners of India. The four mathas today are located in Badrikashram to the north, Sringeri to the south, Puri to the east, Dwaraka to the west.

Shankaracharya is the one who gave an in-depth look at how Buddhism shares its differences with Hinduism. He stated the fact that Hinduism supports and embraces the concept of Atman (soul or self is present) while Buddhism believes in concept of (not self or human soul).
