Buddhism with Chinese characteristics: Panchen Lama pushes President Xi Jinping’s version of religion to Tibet

Lhasa (Tibet): China named Panchen Lama or more specifically the puppet Lama Gyaltsen Norbu recently made headlines for pushing the Chinese claim of Tibetan Buddhism with Chinese characteristics. This version of Buddhism presented by Gyaltsen Norbu is the vision that President Xi Jinping wants to apply to Tibet, according to Tibet Press.

“People are of the opinion that Tibetans will never deviate from their faith and that is absolutely true, but what we can see here with the initiatives of Gyaltsen Norbu is how China, knowing this fact, wants to shift the narrative of Tibetan Buddhism not only to the Tibetans under its thumb but also to Mainland Chinese, who are frequently invested in and follow Tibetan Buddhism since China’s occupation of Tibet,” the report adds.

Tibetans should be grateful to the Chinese Communist Party (CCP), according to the Chinese-appointed Panchen Lama Gyaltsen Norbu, who made the remarks Aug. 2 during his visit to Tashilhunpo Monastery, located at the foot of Mount Nisiri. During his visit to Sangding Monastery and the city of Lhoka last month, Gyaltsen Norbu gave lectures on the topic of “Sinicization of Tibetan Buddhism“.
